“We want them to be comfortable and trust the police by reporting any illegal activities without any fear."

KwaThema – The Adopt a Cop Tournament came to an end with Fred-Habedi Primary School walking away as the 2018 champions in the finals held at KwaThema Stadium on Friday.

The tournament started last Thursday and saw teams being knocked out as the games went on.

This year’s games were played under the theme of “Sports Their Weapon”.

KwaThema police spokesperson Captain Thabo Sibuyi says the objective of the tournament was for a cop to adopt a school and a learner to help fight crime and build a close relationship with the police.

“This will help us fight crime.

“The learners who are abused will develop trust in the police and will be enabled to speak out.

“This is to help create awareness about crime and develop a relationship between the cops and the learners.

“We want them to be comfortable and trust the police by reporting any illegal activities without any fear.

“We understand that young people are afraid of reporting crime to the police because they fear victimisation, but through the initiative we will be able to remove this fear,” he says.

The action started with Phulong Secondary School locking horns with Tlakula High School.
