The sky is the limit for Sello

Sello Malatsi (43) will compete in the National Japanese Karate Association Championship and trials for the All Africa Championship in August.

KwaThema – Malatsi says he has not looked back since he joined the sport 28 years ago, while he was still in boarding school.

“It has been such an amazing journey through the years.

“I am so glad that I never gave up.”

After he finished school, he went to university where he continued to be involved in karate.

“I eventually got a scholarship as an athlete.

“I think the young ones need to aspire to get scholarships as they participate in sports and seek excellence.”

Malatsi says there are endless opportunities that have been presented to him in the sport.

“In university they actually get better assistance because they have professional coaching and state of the art facilities,” adds Malatsi.

“You must never undermine your background, especially coming from the informal settlements.”

The karate enthusiast received his 5th Dan in karate during his last visit to Japan.

“It will take another six years to move on to the next Dan.

“I am trained as a D examiner and C instructor.”

Malatsi will be heading to the Standard Bank Arena on May 26.

“It is going to be a tough competition, but I am prepared.

“I will only be competing in Kata.”
