She is the first female fighter from Ekurhuleni to participate in this championship. The 25-year-old from Geo Maroon Boxing Club was crowned as the Female Prospect of the Year 2017 at the South African Boxing Awards in Port Elizabeth in 2017.

She says she has been preparing for the fight since the beginning of this year.

“I have seen some of the fighters who will be competing on the day; they are some of the strongest fighters in the country.

“I have been training and putting more time in improving my speed and balance.

“I want this fight to be one of my best fights to date,” she says.

Coach Themba Zulu says he is hoping Smangele wins the fight because this will help put her name on the African map as a boxer.

“I believe she is ready to fight for the title and will bring it back home,” he says.
