Exciting weekend of sport , here are some of the sporting events that took place this weekend

It was another exciting weekend of sport. In case you missed it, here is break-down of this past weekend sports results.

FA Cup

Manchester City continued their impressive run when they beat second-tier Cardiff, to reach the last 16 of the FA Cup. The citizens look likely to win all four cups up for grabs this season (FA Cup, Premier League, UEFA and League Cup respectively). Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling ensured that the citizens go through to the next round. Chelsea and Manchester United also advanced to the next round, with the shock of the weekend going to Liverpool after they lost to West Brom, three goals to two.

Absa Premiership

The much anticipated clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns ended in a disappointing stalemate, with both teams struggling to find the net.

Defending champions Bidvest Wits, who seem to have found recent success in the Premier League, came back from a goal down to beat the struggling Supersport by four goals to one. It seemed to be a much better start for Tinkler’s men as they went one nil up through Captain Dean Furman’s 22nd minute penalty. But the home team struggled yet again to maintain their good start and lost to the much improved students who scored four goals in the second half.

Benni Mccarthy’s men couldn’t close the gap on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, as they drew one one to Bloemfontein Celtic.

Australian Open

Roger Federer made history this past weekend as he won the Australian Opens by beating Marin Cilic (6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1). The Swiss professional, who turns 37 this year, couldn’t hold back his tears as he won his third Grand Slam in 12 months.

An inconsistent and unpredictable Wanderers Pitch saw India beat South Africa by 63 runs to salvage a win out of the three match test series. India was bowled out for 247 in their second innings while the Proteas were bowled out for 177. The match, which was called off early on Friday, resumed on Saturday with South Africa needing 241 for victory. The Proteas started well, with veteran Hashim Amla and opener Dean Elgar adding to the overnight score. However, the dismissal of Amla saw the Proteas crumble to 177 all out, losing the last nine wickets for 53 runs.
