Springs Striders host 2 000 runners at Garbie race

It was another successful day for Springs Striders when they hosted the annual Garbie race on Sunday.

The race was held at the Springs Rugby Club and saw 900 people complete the 15km run and 840 finished the 32km run.

The first finisher for the 15km was Kabelo Melamu with a time of 49:33.

In the men’s category, Oscar Sixoka came in second with 52:19 with Jono Mntungwa close on his heels with a time of 53:34.

Jono was also the first to finish in the veterans men’s section with Sello Ramaloko coming in second with 57:07 and Esau Miya in third place with 59:03.

In the masters section, Tony Silva took first place with a time of 62:01.

Solly de Beer came in second with 69:05 and finishing with a time of 72:02 was Milan Daniz in third place.

Competing in the grandmasters’ section, Zabron Nxumalo came in first place with a time of 67:49 with Robin Williams in second with a time of 76:47.

Nkodemus Ngwenya was the first and only great grandmaster to finish with a time of 73:58.

In the women’s category, the first finisher of the 15km run was Andronika Mokgotla with 61:08.

Close on her heels was Portia Ngwenya with a time of 61:35 and Nomsa Cossa finished third in 64:13.

Running in the veterans’ section, Caroline Koll placed first with 67:54.

In second place, with a time of 70:12, was Marilise Vermaak with Florence Munyai completing the trio with a time of 73:19.

Estelle Viljoen finished first in the masters section with a time of 91:13.

In second place in this section was Pam Derksen who finished in 91:31.

Finishing third in 92:44 was Victoria Ngobese.

Grandmasters finishers were Patricia Shaw with a time of 1:41:54 and Miemie Rudling with 1:42:50.

Ria Smith from the Springs Striders finished the great grandmasters’ section in a time of 1:43:41.

Friends, Elize van Staden, Samantha Lange and Estelle Viljoen race to the finish line of the 32km women’s Garbie Race.

The 32km finishers are as follow:

Emmanuel Magakwe took first place with a time of 1:51:15 with Tumelo Mahlangu mere seconds behind coming in at 1:51:59 in second place.

In third place was Charles Soza with 1:54:03.

Veterans first finisher was Greg Barnes with 1:55:51, Micah Kipyego second with 1:56:20 and Siegfriedt Heydenrych in third place with 2:05:31.

Masters first finisher was Dieter Stapel with 2:23:44 with Ernest Molatlhwa in second with a time of 2:36:38 and Zacharia Mogotsi coming in at 2:41:51.

Grandmasters first finisher was Keith Daly with 2:41:04 and Norman Milne in 2:49:29.

Alan McCormack finished the great grandmasters’ section in 3:18:05.

For the women, Salome Cooper was the first finisher in the 32km run with a time of 2:18:25.

Cobie Smith came in second with 2:18:41 and Keneilwe Sesing took third place with a time of 2:21:11.

Veterans first finisher was Salome Cooper with a time of 2:18:25 and Maria Vilakazi in second place with 2:35:55 followed by Felicity Letcher with 2:45:44.

Masters first finisher was Almarie Rothman with 2:54:55, Sue Harrisberg with 2:56:20 in second and Sharon Knopfmacher with 2:58:16 in third.

Grandmasters first finisher was Jennifer Kinsley with a time of 3:10:33 followed by Margaret Boshoe in 3:49:41.

Dot van Heerden finished in the great grandmasters’ section in a time of 5:38:26.
