Sport versus crime

“It is important that residents understand what crime is and which other channels are available to them to report."

Tsakane – Members of Tsakane SAPS Social Crime Prevention joined hands with other stakeholders to launch sport against drugs in Extension Five.

The games are said to keep young people active during the festive season.

Tsakane police spokesperson, Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu, wanted to bring the youth of Tsakane to one place where activities are not crime related and free from drugs and alcohol.

“We are happy the event was launched successfully with many teams and the community members taking an interest and participating,” she says.

Mngomezulu says during the launch they also educated the residents about crime prevention tips.

“It is important that residents understand what crime is and which other channels are available for them to report.

“Some of our residents don’t know some of the services that we offer and through such campaigns we are able to share these with them.

“In all the police stations there is a victim empowerment centre where victims of crime receive the necessary attention.

“We also have a family, child and sexual offences unit which deals with all the crimes against women and children.

“We also distributed pamphlets to the youth to address the challenge of drug abuse.

“We have identified that drugs are introduced to young people in the form of cookies and cakes at a very young age and they often don’t know until they are hooked,” she says.

Mngomezulu says the games will be played until mid-December.

“The different sporting codes include soccer, cricket, netball and basketball,” she says.
