Fun run promotes social responsibility

KwaThema – Reedville Environment Task Team in partnership with a local mining company successfully hosted the annual Environmental Open Day and Fun Run last Friday.

“The main objective is to give the community and the company a platform to engage and get to know one another.

“It is also part of the company’s social labour plan,” explains Jack Mayise, chairperson of the task team.

He says the event is growing as they observe more people participating.

It is estimated that more than 130 people of all ages took part in the 3km fun run / walk.

“Last year’s event resulted in the establishment of the local Bayoyo Athletics Club.

“We are encouraging the community to stay active,” adds Martin Jwili, the team’s administrator.

He says he hopes to see ongoing environmental awareness programmes.

“We are accountable to the company and they are to us.”

Rene Booysen, environmental practitioner for the mining company adds: “we hope in future that the community engage more with the team around environmental matters as part of our continual improvement processes.”

The task team is planning workshops to educate the community about the air and water quality.
