Pretoria – Seregobonoa Frans ‘Mr KK’ Lentsoane (61) participated in the Jacaranda City Marathon in Pretoria on Saturday.

Mr KK, of the KwaThema Striders, finished the 42km marathon without much trouble, in a time of 03:59:54sec.

“This race is one of the qualifiers for the Comrades Marathon, and the whole team did well,” explains Maruping Kodisang, the club’s chairperson.

The club had 20 runners participating in the Jacaranda marathon.

Mr KK also completed the Comrades in 9:50:29secs earlier this year.

“Many people do not participate in sport because they let their age hold them back. But running keeps me healthy,” he says.

Kodisang says the club encourages pensioners to join them.

“They have more time to train, and it will benefit their health. We will work at a pace that they can handle.”

He says the number of members going to next year’s Comrades has grown from 27 to 40.

“We are really happy with the growth.

“It only presents us with new financial challenges.”

Kodisang says the club has a few unemployed runners who need financial assistance, especially for races such as the Comrades.

“We appeal to private businesses and individuals to come through for us.”

The club is now preparing for the Soweto Marathon, which will take place in November.
