Join the Geo Maroon Boxing Club

“We are also calling on parents to encourage and support their children to participate in sports in school and in the community."

KwaThema – Aspiring boxers in the area are invited to join the Geo Maroon Boxing Club.

The club is home to young and older boxers who have competed on an international scale.

Trainer Themba Zulu says a sport is one of the important tools to help fight drugs and other social ills.

“It breaks my heart seeing young people in the community being convicted of crimes whereas they could have used the time to build their lives by being active in sports.

“There are many other sporting codes in the area which they can participate in for free,” says Zulu.

He says that sports teach one to be disciplined and have respect for themselves and the next person and lead a healthy lifestyle.

“We are also calling on parents to encourage and support their children to participate in sports in school and in the community.

They also need the support of local business people especially to help the young players who cannot afford travel expenses to the games or matches or help with catering.

“It is not only the responsibility of the club but also parents and the community at large,” he says.

Zulu says they take young fighters from the age of six and older.

Those who are interested can visit their training ground at Riba, near the Duduza taxi rank.
