KwaThema – A local building materials company hosted a one-day u-13 soccer tournament at KwaThema Sports Complex grounds last weekend.
Sixteen teams – eight from schools and eight from teams from the Local Football Association (LFA) – participated in the tournament.
Soccer coach Mkhonza Mkhonzana says Valencia FC won 3-2 through penalties against Bolton Villa FC.
“They walked away with a set of soccer kit, 16 backpacks, a big trophy, 16 small trophies and a set of water bottles.
“The goalkeeper of the tournament, top goal-scorer and player of the tournament walked away with trophies,” he says.
He says they are happy business people in the area are heeding the call to support sporting activities.
“This shows it is not only our responsibility as sports coaches to make a success out of the local sporting teams.
“We will be able to win the battle against substance abuse if we all join hands,“ he says.
Provincial co-ordinator Dumisani Ndlela says, “We started the initiative in 2005 in every area where our company operates in the province.
“We support under-13 soccer development and have been running soccer tournaments successfully to date.
“We are uplifting the youth in soccer to join the fight against substance abuse in our townships,“ he says.
Dumisani says they are working on hosting other tournaments more frequently and not just annually.
