The event organiser, Constable Percy Modikoe from the KwaThema police, says the event was aimed at educating the learners about the dangers of taking drugs.

“We also wanted to build a relationship of trust between the community and the children because they are often used to sell drugs in their schools.

“We want the community to know we are not enemies but an extension of the community meant to keep peace and safety.

“Some of the police arrest successes we make daily are as a result of the help of the community tip-offs,” he says.

“Through the help of the community we will be able to remove criminals from the streets,” he says.

Modikoe says they also want to encourage and motivate the learners to participate in sports to keep them away from committing crime.

“We are also aiming to encourage a healthy lifestyle among community members to help fight obesity,” he says.

Modikoe says the event was made possible by various social development organisations in the community, which included the local Community Policing Forum (CPF).
