Sports to fight drugs

KwaThema - Dream Team netball and soccer team is taking a stand to help fight drug addiction and crime in the area.

The team was formed last year to help remove the children from the streets and keep them busy through sports.

Chairperson of the team, Vusi Radinne (35), says they were concerned about young children who were giving up their lives to drugs.

“I was heartbroken that young boys aged 12 were already experimenting with drugs.

“When I looked around I realised they didn’t have anything to keep them busy after school and on weekends.

“I decided to invite some of my friends to form the group.”

“We also want children from our community to have opportunities to represent the country in sports,” he adds.

Vusi says the group is made up of players between the ages of 6 to16.

“We want them to learn to play sports at an early age so they will be exposed to the sports at a young age.

“We are calling on parents to allow their children to participate in sports,” he says.

The treasurer of the team, Sosi Mateme, says they are pleading with business people in the area to support the team.

“The team doesn’t have gear, they play in their home clothes which makes it difficult for the players to identify themselves as a team.

“We also need netballs and soccer balls and poles,” she says.

She says the team will be successful if they have the support of the community.

“This is an initiative to remove the children from the streets and the success lies with the community,” she says.
