Soccer legends take care of each other

KwaThema - Soccer legends in the South African Masters Legends Association (SAMLAFA) are using the sport to motivate young boys and support their peers.

Former Kaizer Chiefs player Mkhonzana ‘Skhetshekhetshe’ Mkhonza says the association was formed in 2001.

“This was after we identified that a lot of the soccer stars struggle after their days of playing.

“They didn’t have any skill which they could use after their soccer-playing days were over.

“Some could not afford a burial society and ended up being buried as paupers.”

He adds that they decided to form a national association to cater for their needs.

“We wanted to restore their dignity,” he says.

He says that soccer kept them focused, taught them discipline and responsibility and kept them away from criminal activities.

“We also wanted to contribute to the development of sports in the area.

“We have different teams playing in the local football leagues and competing outside,” he says.

Former player Jimmy ‘Music Man’ Mahlangu, says they will be hosting a soccer festival in schools next month.

“The participating teams should include 12- to 15-year-olds.”

Jimmy is encouraging students who are studying sports management and sports administration to join them.
