Chosen for tennis camp

KwaThema - Five local tennis players from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy are preparing to go and visit Soweto.

The purpose of the trip is to attend a two-day camp, from February 25 to 26, which will be hosted at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre.

These athletes range from the junior to senior phase and include Isaac Mthombeni, Njabulo Sengwayo, Thapelo Motsapi, Simon Mbonani and Sibusiso Khuzwayo.

“On the first day of the camp, the selected tennis players will be training.

“And on day two, there will be selection for those who can compete in the SA Open Tournament.

“My wish is for at least two or three of our players to make the cut,” says chairman Aubrey Mathibela.

The youngest of the pack to be going to Soweto is Sengwayo, who says it’s a great feeling to be going to the camp.

Mthombeni, on the other hand, says it is an opportunity for them as players, because it is a chance to prove themselves.

“This camp could award us a chance to qualify to participate in local and international tournaments.

“We are therefore looking forward to the experience and performance,” he says.

He adds that other young people living with disabilities should come and join them.

“There are plenty of opportunities, especially through sports,” he says.

The team practises from Monday to Friday between 3pm and 5pm at the KwaThema Stadium.
