Local athlete wins championship gold

KwaThema – Seven athletes represented Ulinda Athletic Club at the South African Championships, in George, in the Cape, last Saturday.

The local athletes, Banele Mkhawani, Meli Matsaba, ZaneleMayisa, Pule Tjaoana, Moeketsi Moagi and Veliswa Dungwa, took part in the 4km and 8km cross-country races.

Of the seven athletes, Moagi, who competed in the 8km open category, outran his peers, to win a gold medal.

“It was a tough race, and the Cape weather also contributed, but I’m happy that it made me push myself as an athlete, to be able to adapt to any weather conditions during races,” he said.

“I’d like to thank our coach, Tjaoana, who has been supportive in making sure we get the necessary training and has been there to lead us as a club.

“With the cross-country season over, we will be preparing for the track events which will kick off next month.”

Mkhawani will also be heading to the Schools Nationals, in Mpumalanga, next month.
