Locals do well in tournament

Tsakane - Three local karatekas, from the Short and Sweet Shotokan Karate Institute, in Tsakane, recently participated in the Skisa Team Challenge Tournament, at Durban University of Technology.

According to Sensei Jackson Kokong, his three students, Sandile Sibendko, Manqoba and Bathabile Kokong, came home with three bronze medals.

He says he is very proud of his students for showing commitment during the competition, as they are all amateurs who have less than six months experience in the sport.

“They have proven their potential during the tournament; it gives me joy to see that they managed to get medals at their very first tournament.

“My vision is to promote the sport throughout Kwatsaduza, to encourage young children so they cannot only be physically trained, but also build self-discipline and self esteem,” he says.

Jackson also mentions that his passion for karate has led him to teach other adults and children, even though it proves challenging, because he gives them much needed attention and support,so that they develop in the sport.

He appeals for parents and local stakeholders to assist where they can, because it is a problem for karate students to participate in tournaments, due to a lack of funding.
