Community walk for a good cause

KwaThema – Recently a fun walk was held at the Ekurhuleni East College in KwaThema, where young and old walked and ran in the 5km and 10km challenges.

The walk/run was held to honour women and also promote a healthy lifestyle among community members.

Member of the sports sector in Ward 79, Saki Kgaphola, says he was pleased with the turnout at the event. Young children were also part of the fun walk which encourages them to take an interest in sports, he says.

Kgaphola adds that although it was a good event there were a few glitches with the co-ordination of the event which could have resulted in participants getting into accidents because of lack of safety.

“I want to appeal to all sporting event organisers in the community to seek professional help when hosting events that involve the community because the safety of participants should be of utmost importance,” he says.

Kgaphola also wants to encourage parents to get their children involved in sports so they may stay away from negative activities such as substance abuse and crime.

“We need more children participating in sports because it occupies them and it would be of great help if our local municipality also assists us by building more sports grounds and recreation centres in the community,” he adds.
