A cricket clinic

Duduza – To introduce and entice local children to cricket the Duduza Cricket Club partnered with the Eastern Junior Cricket Club Association (EJCCA) to host a cricket clinic.

Last Sunday the u/14 and u/15 EJCCA provincial team took to the pitch in a friendly T20 match to entertain and kick off the festivities.

According to Tshepo Mofokeng, head coach of Duduza Cricket Club, the aim of the event was to engage with local cricket players and children in order to get them excited and enthusiastic about the game.

He says promoting cricket in the township is very important to them as a club to ensure that the sport doesn’t die in the community, where it is somewhat unpopular.

He wants to get more and more children in the community excited about the sport.

“Having this coaching clinic is very beneficial for us as coaches and also for the players for them to get exposed to other forms of training.

“The EJCCA teams also did their bit and helped in coaching our local junior teams along with the girls teams. These are the types of events we need for us to promote and sustain the growth of cricket in our community,” says Mofokeng.

The coach mentions that there is a lot of work that needs to be done to bridge the gap between township players and players from more affluent areas.

“More games need to be organised in the community because you will find that a cricket player from a private school plays a total of 100 games in a year as opposed to a township player who plays only 20 games.

“So with the help of our stakeholder we want to give all players a fair chance and try to ensure that players are able to play all year round,” he adds.
