Bongani Zungu Tournament approaches final mark

Duduza – Numerous teams gathered in Duduza at the weekend, to participate in the annual Bongani Zungu Soccer Tournament.

Two of the teams who competed in the u/15 semi-finals were Remember Academy of Secunda, who took on the local Clever Boys, on Ground One.

As the match kicked off, the away side opened the game with a goal from Ntokozo Zulu (13), however, no further goals were added in this stanza.

The second half was a nail-biting experience for the fans, as Remember dominated the space, leaving the Clever Boys at their mercy as they fought to defend.

Less than five minutes in and Khulekani Zulu (13) scored the second goal for his side.

This prompted the home team to get their act together and bag their first goal, made possible by Mpumelelo Nhlapho (14).

As supporters of the home side gained confidence that the team could catch up, things took a turn for the worse.

The immaculate skills of Remember players on the pitch saw Eddie Ntuli (14) bag the third goal for his side.

Two minutes later Khulekani Zulu scored his second goal for the day, which put his team at four goals.

Then, fewer than five minutes from the end, Sibusiso Ngwenya netted another goal, which put Remember on five goals.

The game ended at 5-1.

Bafana Kunene, one of the committee members who organised the tournament, explained the tournament started on June 25 and was played during the winter school holidays, to promote development in the township.

“Bongani Zungu is a professional soccer player from Duduza and this is his vision, aimed at helping to develop young players from the community of Kwatsaduza and surrounding areas, and coaches.

“As a result, we were pleased this year, as we were able to get five divisions, with eight u/11 teams, 20 u/13 teams, 25 u/15 teams, 16 u/17 teams and 16 u/21 teams competing.

“The u/17s and u/21s had knock-out rounds, while the other divisions had group stages,” Kunene said.

”At this stage we are at semi-finals and third place play-offs, then the finals of the various age groups will take place from 9am on Saturday, at the Duduza Stadium.”
