Lifelong learning for coaching

Duduza - Former professional soccer player and coach Godfrey Hermanus (34) is proving to be unstoppable as he climbs up the coaching ladder.

He recently enrolled for a C license in coaching, at the University of Pretoria High Performance Centre.

Hermanus starting his formal schooling journey in coaching with other local coaches earlier this year when a group from Kwatsaduza completed their D license training in Germiston.

“In May I then enrolled for a ten day course for my C license which is something I am very proud of.

“I attended the course, which was very fruitful, with other former Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Sundowns players such as Benson Mhlongo, Rowen Fernandez and Surprise Moriri, among others, and gained a lot,” he says.

When asked what inspired him to carry on with these courses, he says right now he sees this as an opportunity to complete all his courses while he still has the chance.

All that he needs now, is to coach for a year and get his C license, before moving on to compete a B license which he is looking at venturing into next year.

“I want to see myself with a pro license and coaching in the Premier Soccer League which is what is keeping me focused.

“Soccer is something I have always loved and started playing at the age of five till I was fortunate enough to move on to play professionally for Wits.

“When my contract expired, I ended up playing in other divisions and under teams such as City Sharks and African All Stars, till I realised it was time to move onto developing young players, which is where my love for coaching came about,” he says.

Hermanus encourages all aspiring coaches to attend local coaching workshops and training courses as he believes playing soccer and training are two totally different things.

“These courses help you develop, gain knowledge and experience from other people with the know-how in the industry.

“People should also remember talent and a certificate are not enough on their own, so you need to go out there, get the training and do practical work on coaching as it’s something you get better with when you work on it,” he says.
