Makeleni completes Comrades Marathon

KwaThema – Age could not keep the 54-year-old athlete Sandile Makeleni from taking part in this year’s Comrades Marathon race in Pietermaritzburg last Sunday.

Finishing in the time of 10 hours and 53 minutes, the athlete is proud that he beat his time of 11 hours and 53 minutes which was how long it took him to finish the race last year.

The Carnival City Sports Club athlete recalls how he made it to the finish line through prayer and perseverance.

“The previous day before the race I contracted flu but that didn’t stop me from being part of the 16 807 runners at the starting point.

“There were moments during the race where I wanted to give up, especially when going on a steep rise, but my love for running kept me going,” says the athlete.

Makeleni swears that anyone who has completed a Comrades Marathon is a hero because it’s one of the toughest and testing races one can be a part of.

Even though he mentions that he loves down races as opposed to up races, that didn’t make it any easier for him.

“I will definitely do it again, up until I cannot when age really catches up with me.

“I still believe that I can beat my best time of nine hours and 25 minutes if I get more time to train because I only train twice a week,” he say.

He will be participating in the MTN 21km race in the next couple of weeks which he confidently says he will finish with ease.
