Toilet project up and running again

Duduza – In weeks to come the remaining residents of Maschaba, Extension 4 will have their own functional toilets.

The 121 toilets that are going to be erected in the informal settlement will help residents who have been waiting for their RDP houses to be built.

Residents in the area didn’t have a functional toilet system and are without electricity even now after years of living in the area.

According to ward councillor, Phindile Mbonani, the project started in 2013 with the initial plan of erecting a functional toilet system for every resident.

But due to unforeseen problems they had to stop the project, which later resumed in 2014 and paused again last year with 252 toilets erected.

“Now we are finishing off the 121 remaining shacks without toilets this time around,” says Mbonani.

Thulisile Diale, a resident says her toilet system was erected last year but is already deteriorating and she fears that by the time her RDP home is built it would be spoilt.

She explains the torture they had to endure using the bucket system and pit toilets while waiting for flushing toilets.

“Children were falling inside the toilet pits, our homes were infested by insects and it was unhygienic.

“But the struggle continues because we are still without electricity,” claims the resident.

Mbonani says after the toilets are completed they will attend to electrifying the informal settlement because they acknowledge the fact that they have lived without electricity for many years.

“Eskom will electrify the whole area once all the toilets have been erected,” she adds.
