New netball team for KwaThema youth

KwaThema – Diski Divas is one of the newest netball teams to be formed in the White City area.

The team was started two months ago with the aim of taking young girls off the street, off drugs, to keep them busy and away from bad activities, to promote the sport and to help them keep fit.

“Currently our team comprises three age groups (u/16, u/19 and open) and these are young people identified from our community while other have asked to join us, hence our team keeps growing daily even though some don’t come and skip practise due to work commitments.

“Challenges we are faced with is that there is no proper netball courts in this area so we are forced to use a portion of the soccer field, which we end up fighting over with the boys who want to play soccer, as the grassed area is not level enough.

“In addition to this, we then have to draw our own lines in the sand to create a feasible court for the girls to play on,” says coach Nelly Nhlapho.

As this is still a fairly new team, the team further has major challenges including having no kit or first aid kits especially as some players sustain injuries and have to be rushed to the local clinics or hospital.

For now the team is also only able to participate in friendly games as some tournaments tend to be expensive, and they have to take money from their own pockets.

Nhlapho emphasises that regardless of all of this, she would love to see this team grow and to see some of their girls playing for the South African team.

The teams practise at the Ntokozweni Grounds in White City, from Monday to Thursday from 4.30pm to 6pm.
