Local athletes give top performance

KwaThema – Local athletes from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy have come back home victorious, after giving a thrilling performance at the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled.

The team of 18 athletes represented Gauteng in Bloemfontein after taking off on Friday 18.

They competed at the Mangaung Stadium in athletics cerebral palsy (CP) soccer, athletics, javelin, shot-put, long jump and discus, and they managed to come back home with numerous awards.

KwaThema Disability Sports Academy chairperson Aubrey Mathebela says the team brought home a total of 14 gold, three silver and two bronze medals, while the CP soccer team obtained second position.

In addition to this, two athletes registered five SA records. Tshepang Joubert registered records in the 100m, 200m and long jump, while Zandile Nhlapho registered two records in javelin and shot-put.

Princess Kerr and Mbali Precious Dhlamini, who are among the youngest athletes in the team, also managed to get qualifying standards for their performance.

Mathebela says he is thrilled with the performance of the team, as they all did well.

“This success shows that hard work, determination and commitment do pay off, so we couldn’t be happier with our results.

“Now we are just still waiting for the response on which of our athletes have been selected for South Africa’s team for the Paralympics Games,” he says.
