WATCH: Introducing children to new sports

Duduza – Local resident Boy Mbonane of Bluegum, is making a positive impact in the lives of young children in Duduza, who see themselves taking up extreme sports as a career one day.

He does this through teaching children how to ride quad bikes on numerous townships grounds, which is something rare that the young ones seem to enjoy.

While others just queue to enjoy the experience, others are taking it very seriously as they say they would also like to see themselves doing it as a profession in the future.

“I started doing this last year during school holidays or when I was available and the children enjoyed it as it’s something they don’t see every day.

“This was after I had first bought one of these quad bikes for my daughter, but saw how other children wished they could have the same experience since they would just come and watch her.

“So because of my love for children and wanting to see them happy, I bought more and started bringing them out to the community,” he says.

He adds that even though petrol to run the bikes is costly and maintaining them is a loss for him, he just does it out of the goodness of his heart as through it, children are off the streets especially on weekends and holidays.

“This way no child feels as though they are not good enough to have such an experience and they love it.

“And because of the fun of it, I have even started moving around to other locations and in addition teach the children road safety.

“So far I have six of these quad bikes and my dream is to be able to buy more and one day even have a club or team where these children can learn and have a foundation should they want to take this up as a sport in the future,” he says.

One of the children who has become a regular rider of these quad bikes, Bonginkosi Nkosi (13), says he enjoys riding and that it is fun.

He thanks Mbonane for giving them this opportunity as he says now he loves it so much that he wants to do it professionally.
