New kit for chess club

Brakpan - Last Saturday a supermarket donated T-shirts to the KwaThema School of Chess in Brakpan.

The school, which offers chess lessons to the community, has been without a uniform for a while and the founder of the school, Anthony Shoba said they are happy to have received their very own kit.

“I’m overwhelmed by the kind gesture from the supermarket and I know the chess players are happier that they will have a uniform to wear when they go and compete.

“I hope the new kit will encourage the players to perform well during tournaments,” says Shoba.

The school received two sets of uniforms for the junior and senior teams.

Mario Hadjialexandrou, managing director of the supermarket, says as a business they support every sporting code in the township and understand that it is a challenge for sporting clubs to secure sponsorship hence they were willing to help.

Shoba emphasised the fact that a lot of youngsters are not able to go further in their sporting careers because of lack of sponsorship.

“Many of my players could have made it far in chess but because we lack sponsorship they are unable to affiliate and go to various tournaments held in the chess fraternity,” he says.
