Two athletics boys excel at championships

Kwatsaduza – The Kwatsaduza Athletics Club is proud to recognise two of its shining stars, who participated in the South African Athletics Championships, that were held in Germiston on Saturday.

Karabo Mashilo (13) took first place in the 1 500m u/13 category while Siyabonga Ngoqonwa (13) finished in the third position.

Coach Moeketsi ”Sparks” Moagi says he is very proud of the boys as they did well in the competition.

“Congratulations to the boys for doing so well and thank you to them for their hard work, discipline and dedication,” he adds.

Mashilo shares his experience of the race, saying he was happy before it started and that he could not wait to begin running.

“I knew I would take the first position and, when I got to the last 200m, I went for it; it was not a hard race as I was well prepared for it.

“Next time, I am looking to improve on my time, since I completed the race in four minutes and 35 seconds,” he says.

Ngoqonwa says he was a bit nervous, as it was his first time competing at championship level, but adds that he told himself he was going to try his best.

The youngster says next time he hopes to take first place, as he completed the race in four minutes and 41 seconds.

In addition to this success, the Kwatsaduza Athletics Club will participate in the half-marathon (21.1km) and the 10km road race that will be held on December 6, in celebration of World Aids Day, at the Katlehong Sports Complex.

Then, on December 12, the entire team has a training camp with Tembisa Athletics to prepare for January when the track and field league starts.

Moagi encourages more youngsters from the ages of five to 21 years to join the club and attend team practises at the KwaThema Sports Complex, during the week.
