Handball coach reaches his goal

Daveyton – Lee Mdakane (36), the national handball coach for the South African women’s team acquired his A licence in coaching while he attended a five-day workshop in Brazzaville, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, last month.

The workshop took place during the All Africa Games.

He prides himself on this achievement as he is the second person in the country to possess an A licence in handball coaching.

Mdikane says the trip to the Congo was very informative and coaches were taught new things in terms of analysing and training.

“I’m very happy I managed to get my A licence, it was a goal I was working towards and it has finally materialised.

“It was an honour to be in the presence of other handball coaches, who have far more experience than me, and to learn and share ideas with them,” says Mdakane.

According to Mdakane, the International Handball Federation (IFH) will be introducing the sport to FET colleges and high schools in the future to ensure the sport grows in the country.

“I’ve been getting calls from community members who are showing interest in the sport,” he adds.
