Local runners conquer the Comrades

KwaThema - Thirty five runners from KwaThema Striders took part in this year's Comrades Marathon.

This year’s race was uphill from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Mandla Hlatshwayo from the KwaThema Striders says the race was not easy, but many of their runners managed to cross the finish line.

He explains that five of their runners were unable to compete after suffering injuries during their last training session.

Hlatshwayo is confident these runners will compete in next year’s race.

The Striders made Kwatsaduza proud when Maropeng Kodisang and Lucky Sogo came back with silver medals after completing the race with a time of 7:30;00. John Mahlaba and Sibusiso Mlengetya received Bill Rowan medals after finishing in nine hours.

Bronze medals were awarded to 20 Striders runners who completed the race in 11 hours.

Six received Vic Clapham medals after completing the race in 12 hours.

KwaThema resident Jabulani Mashinini, who is from the Nedbank Running Club, also took part in the race.

He came home with a Bill Rowan medal after completing the race in eight hours.

This was Mashinini’s first Comrades and he is proud of the time in which he finished.

He aims to finish next year’s Comrades in seven hours.
