Bronze from the Comrades

KwaThema- Last Sunday, Sandile Makeleni (55), from the Carnival City Sports Club, ran the Comrades Marathon in Durban and received a bronze medal.

The KwaThema Primary School teacher was expecting to finish the race in 10 hours, but took 11:53:08 to complete the uphill run.

“As a runner you sometimes aim for certain results and they may not materialise,” he says.

This year was his eighth time competing in the ultra-marathon and he knew what to expect.

“I am not good at up races, hence I had to push myself when I got to the uphill,” says Makeleni.

He started long distance running at a young age and has never stopped running since.

The KwaThema resident believes he could have done much better if he had more time to train for the steep hills.

He has only weekends to train for all his races, due to the fact that he has to work during the week.

In the next Comrades he plans to beat his best time of 9:25:11.

Makeleni says he will continue to run marathon races until his health deteriorates .

He will now start preparing for the City to City Marathon, in September.
