Tsakane Stadium now open

The Tsakane Stadium has been officially opened and the community can now book to use the stadium.

The construction of the stadium began in August 2009.

Rusty grey stands of the old stadium were demolished and replaced by new concrete grey stands, with protective steel bars on the edges.

The construction and upgrade process included the addition of a pavilion area, installation of the sanitation and electricity networks and a palisade protective wall fence.

According to the metro’s spokesman, Themba Radebe, since August, the community has been using the stadium to host different sporting codes such as netball, soccer, basket ball and tennis.

He says the R78-million multi-purpose stadium can hold 25 000 people.

Radebe adds that there are security guards at the stadium all the time.

Metro’s director for sport and recreation Atwell Sijadu said the quality of the stadium is such that it can host provincial and national sport events.

“We also believe that access to such a facility will create an enabling environment for grooming athletes and teams that will be able to compete at the highest level of participation,” said Sijadu.

He says the bookings to use the stadium can be done at the Tsakane Customer Care Centre offices from Monday to Friday between 8am and 4.30pm, adding that the tariffs to book the stadium differ.

The community clubs or the amateur clubs who use the stadium will pay R1 330 rental fee and R2 660 refundable deposit.

The non-sporting event organisers will have to pay a rental fee of R26 000 and the refundable deposit of R53 000 to use the facility.

Tsakane resident Vusi Mahlasela said he is happy that the community can now use the facility.

“Teams have been struggling with the venue to host their tournaments,” said Mahlasela.
