Mxolisi is the world champion

Mxolisi ‘Mayweather’ Nombewu from Geo Maroon Boxing Club, was crowned the new International bantam-weight champion.

Mayweather, the new champion, won the fight against Siphosethu Mvula on Saturday at East London’s Orient Theatre.

He was announced as the new world bantam-weight champion after he knocked out his opponent during the third round.

The fight that was supposed to have 12 rounds was called off after Mayweather defeated his opponent by giving him a powerful punch on the cheek that was followed by a strong punch in the ribs that put Mvula down.

Being crowned the world champion is a great achievement for Mayweather.

He said despite the fact that he did not get time to warm up before getting into the ring, he knew that he was going to win the fight.

“I was mentally and physically fit enough for the fight after training very hard,” he said.

He added that when he was announced the winner, his heart was filled with the joy of knowing that he did not take the world champion title for himself but he did for all the boxers from Kwatsaduza who wished to have the title but could not make it.

“I will always be grateful for what my coach has done for me, believing in me and being the source of strength all the years that I have been a boxer,” said a proud Mayweather.

He said he is proud that he is the world champion from the township, something that he believes will also encourage young boxers to aim high and focus on achieving their dreams.

He also thanked his mother for the support she has shown him, saying that even though she could not afford to provide everything for him, she gave him the love and support that he needed.

Mayweather is expected to defend the world championship title in November.

Coach Themba Zulu said Mayweather’s victory means reaching the goal that he always wanted to achieve for more than 10 years of being a boxing coach.

“I had no doubt that Mayweather was not only going to be the SA champ but was also going to be crowned the world champion,” concluded an excited and proud Zulu.
