Fighting for medals

Displaying kata and kumite

Kicking and punching was the order of the day, during a karate All Style Championship on Saturday.

The day was hosted by KwaThema Shotokoun Karate Dojo, at Kenneth Masekela Secondary School.

This was the second phase of the championships organised by Sensei Mike Cindi, and 30 fighters were selected.

Thirty-one other fighters were selected during the first phase of the championships, which was hosted in Port Elizabeth earlier this year.

Shotokounthigh from Hillbrow, Midrand Karate Club and Dube Young Blood from Soweto, were opponents during Saturday’s championship.

Mike says the 61 fighters will face each other next year, in a combined development championship.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to fighters doing kumite (fighting) and kata (demonstration), in the categories seven to 15 years.

Three fighters from KwaThema Shotokoun Karate Dojo managed to get medals.

Fighting in the 14 to 15-year category, Thapelo Gangqa managed a silver medal for kata and a bronze for kumite, while Sthembiso Khoza received a bronze for kumite.

In the 10 to 11-year category it was Loyiso Sibaca who walked away with bronze medals in kata and kumite.
