Passionate about golf

While his peers roam the streets with nothing to do, Mpho Mthembu (21) spends his time at the KwaThema sports complex practicing his swing.

The young man started playing golf six years ago while he was still in primary school. “I remember they came to our class and wanted people who were interested in playing golf and I put my hand up.”

The coach then started training the young players and they were part of Impala Platinum development with corporate sponsorship available. It seemed all was well.

However, that has all faded and Mpho says he is “the only man standing” and now practices on his own.

Mpho has a handicap of 12 and usually starts his games by using a one driver which is his strength. He has a daily routine which he sticks to, as that helps him stay focused and in shape. “I wake up very early and jog from KwaThema to Selcourt, when I come back I prepare and go to school. Every day after school I go to the sports complex and play golf alone until 5pm then go to the gym,” he says.

Asked what he loves most about golf, Mpho says golf is a stress-reliever and he enjoys losing himself in the sport.

Although all seems well, Mpho admits to facing challenges even though he doesn’t let those challenges get him away from his love of playing golf. “I really need a coach to help improve my swing and parting. I would also like to see myself competing again and really need mentoring and sponsorship.”
