The National Energy Regulator (Nersa) announced that South Africans will pay 9.41 per cent more for electricity in 2019. Here is what the people of Kwatsaduza had to say…

Doctor Lentsweni: It makes sense for electricity to increase. Eskom is facing major challenges and they need our help and the only way they can raise the needed capital is by hiking the tariff.
Johannes Manala: As a pensioner this is going to have a negative impact on my daily life. Food is expensive, the petrol price is high as well and I am unemployed. We won’t be able to meet basic needs since everything is expensive.
Tshwarelo Nkgadima: This will lead to more illegal connections because there is no way people will be able to afford it now. South Africa’s municipalities are in lots of trouble because people simply do not pay their electricity bills. I feel sorry for pensioners.
Sihle Radebe: This is not fair. We cannot be held accountable for something we were not part of. This will furthermore have a negative impact on our economy. Already we are dealing with load-shedding and high unemployment.
Verna Magane: I do not think it is a good idea. It will pressurise our economy even more. What they should do is charge those implicated in the State Capture to repay all the money they stole from Eskom.
Lovers Venter: As a student, I am struggling with high-cost living as it is now, imagine having to pay more money for electricity because at the end of the day, electricity has become a basic need. If it indeed goes up I won’t vote.
Pabalo Moletsane: Government cannot allow this to happen. We as South Africans are suffering, there is no employment, but we are expected to pay with money we do not have, while people in power keep on using the money meant for the people like those at Eskom.
Sindiswa Tshabalala: This will affect my budget negatively. I spend so much money on electricity as it is. I will have to switch off my geyser and other electronics and this will damage my stuff.
