Fans should be punished, not the club

Unruly fans should be held personally responsible for their actions at sporting events

I’ve been a Kaizer Chiefs fan since the day I was born, thanks to my dad.

I really didn’t have much of an option.

So the actions of some of the club’s supporters on Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium were beyond disappointing.

Their behaviour is inexcusable.

Hooligans, I think that is what they call them in Europe.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has since charged Kaizer Chiefs FC with misconduct and bringing the league into disrepute.

But why should the club be punished for the actions of their supporters?

I have never understood.

How is it the club’s responsibility to ensure that their supporters have the emotional intelligence to accept defeat decently?

These are adults who have no official affiliation with the team.

And it is not like the there are lists compiled neatly with the fans’ telephone numbers and addresses.

Legal action should be taken and be focused on the criminals.

Even though the PSL has committed to investigating the heinous acts alongside the police, I remain in doubt that individuals will be persecuted for their actions.

This is not the first time that this has happened and the guilty walk away like it was just a bad dream.

We will never forget watching in horror as people were trampled to death at Ellis Park on April 11, 2001.

And last year one of my uncles nearly lost his leg when a group of people decided to push through the line after ‘waiting too long’.

There are too many examples of this disrespect from a few, while everyone else just wants to enjoy the sport.

People who have no regard for others do not deserve to gather with them.

And what should stop these criminals next time, good manners?

The public could also do its part in blowing the whistle.

We know who some of these people are.
