You only have one life. Look after it

Kwatsaduza - Illness is something that can affect anyone in any age group and from any race or culture.

It can be passed on from generation to generation in your family and may be due to lifestyle choices or to something that cannot be explained.

Although some illnesses may be curable, in some instances things may not be that simple.

In fact, most of the time, because of ignorance or lack of information, we sometimes believe we will never fall ill.

We believe that certain illnesses are for other cultures or for the opposite gender.

We go about either living recklessly or carrying the weight of the world, families or work on our shoulders, and by the times we realise something is wrong, it is too late to reverse the consequences.

It is therefore time as a nation to start taking care of our health, as our bad choices are reducing our lifespans.

We are getting more sick more often and we are therefore at risk of losing more years off our lives because we do not make our health a priority.

Here are some tips to help you take better care of yourself:

• It is imperative to try and eat healthy foods most of the time.

• Watch what you drink, to keep yourself hydrated.

• Limit or quit smoking and drinking alcohol.

• Include some form of activity in your life (every little bit helps) or exercise on a certain number of days a week.

• Avoid taking a lot of sugar into your body.

• Make sure that you drink enough water instead of fizzy drinks and juice.

• Try to limit the amount of stress in your life, as the after-effects may be dire.

• Get enough rest daily so that your body can relax.

• Practise safe sex or abstain.

• Ensure that you go to a healthcare facility for regular check-ups, to know what is happening in your life.

It is also very important to listen to your body. If something is not right, you will probably feel it.

Know your body, make time for yourself and if you suspect something is not right, do not postpone going to ask for help.
