Can you afford it?

Kwatsaduza – So all roads headed to the July Handicap (I’m a bit old school, I guess), where people put their best foot forward in what is said to be Africa’s biggest horse race event.

How I wished to be a part of all the festivities and the dressing up, but then… I know nothing about horse betting or the history of horse racing.

So in essence I’d be there to spend money on expensive bottles of bubbly and trying to feel important amongst the millionaires and billionaires who have actually placed bets and are waiting patiently for the jockey to bring back their money’s worth.

What I continuously fail to understand is why people bend their backs and mess up their budgets just to be a part of an event that’s actually ideal for the affluent and moneyed.

Social media is abuzz with people you know who went there with their life savings and will have to start from scratch after a weekend of sin.

There is nothing wrong with one having a bit of fun and spending a little, but not when it compromises the rest of your financial year and all you have to show for it are Instagram and Facebook pictures.

Durban July is a spectacular event, don’t get me wrong, especially when you are there to network and meet potential business associates, it makes sense to want to be VIP and all.

What I’m trying to get across is that people should do things that will benefit them in the long run as opposed to trying to be part of the circle that actually doesn’t care about you.

When you make your way to your house and you faced with no fuel and groceries for the rest of the July, guess what? The joke is on you!

I know especially in our younger lives we constantly try and be the envy of angles and try to assure our circle that we have made it (however you define “it”).

You have not made it if you have to go and take out a loan for a weekend trip. You can’t afford it!

You have not made it if you have a blesser sponsoring your trip in return for something.

So in all honesty we need to start finding our lanes in our lives, knowing exactly what we can afford and what is still a desire.

Going to a specific event or being part of a certain clique should never define who you are and what you are capable of.

Durban July has come and gone. Have you achieved what you wanted to achieve?
