Why it’s important to read to your children

Kwatsaduza – You wake up in the morning, prepare for your day, get your children ready and off you go to work.

Then come back later, are tired and just want to rest after a long day’s work, but still have chores to do, which leaves you not enough time to spend with your little one.

This is the life of most parents, and though they wish for their children to be brighter or smarter, in the hustle and bustle of life, some end up forgetting that apart from teachers being the driving force behind the child’s learning process, they too, as parents, can help in the development of their children.

A way to do this is by introducing your children to reading from a young age.

The benefits of reading to your child is that it could be a fun daily activity that can help you bond more with your child while they acquire certain skills.

You don’t even have to read an entire book to them in a day as just a few pages can do the trick.

This activity will help your child to get into the culture of reading from an early stage and it might help them in developing their speech and help learn language skills faster.

They can learn from you how to read out loud, the pronunciation of words, learn different sounds, patterns, colours, improve listening skills, how to better construct sentences and how to care for books.

And surely this can help in building their confidence and self-esteem.

In the world we live in, children need to be able to communicate not just with you, but with the outside world and through that, be easily able to express themselves.

So, if they have already helped them acquire some of these skills, by the time they get into a school environment, or in touch with the outside world, it will be easier for them to communicate and it will be simpler for them to relate what they are reading about to what’s happening in their daily lives.

Another benefit of reading to your child earlier on, is that it helps them learn how to concentrate, to be disciplined and to be able to memorise details.

Through all of this, your child might be able to start seeing reading as a fun activity in future, instead of something that is complicated and boring.

And these skills will sure help them when they are in school to perform better.
