Let’s celebrate our heritage

Kwatsaduza - As Heritage Month is upon us, it is the perfect time to celebrate and recognise our diverse heritage as a country.

We are richly blessed with a vast number of cultures which make this country what it is today.

Our history is one that is very unique. It bares so many wounds and triumphs but it makes us who we are.

I love the diversity you find in this country, it has a bit of Western and African. Where else can you find that?

When driving around certain parts of the city, you sometimes feel you are not in Africa as there are skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and many other wonders that you would find in a Western city.

Then you take a trip to the Kruger National Park, in Mpumalanga, where you are in the middle of nature and can see animals in the wild and not caged.

The food which comes out of South Africa cannot be compared to any other country. We have 11 different cultures which each have a certain style for preparing food.

There is a lot for us to explore in this country.

I myself have not tasted all the delicious food which is made by other cultures.

I have yet to taste masonja worms which the Pedi culture love so much and, during Heritage month, I have tasked myself to eat three South African dishes which I have never eaten.

When I see the cultural dressing, oh my, that just makes me want to put on my Ndebele regalia and show off my origins.

I see all the rainbow colours in traditional attires, the creativity and artistic talent that is displayed on the crafts and it makes me so proud to be part of this versatile country.

With all that is bad in our country, we should not forget about the good that we still have.

Yes, we are faced with a lot of challenges which still need to be tackled, but let’s also celebrate and be proud of our heritage.
