It’s summer time

Kwatsaduza - The season for braais and picnics has finally arrived, it's time to pack away all those heavy coats and boots and embrace summer.

I love summer simply because the days are longer and the nights are shorter, so you kind of feel like you have more hours in day to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Besides that, I just love the whole mood people have during the summer season – it just seems people are happier about life.

I remember when I was growing up, we would wait for September 1 to welcome spring.

We would pour water over each other because we didn’t have swimming pools in the townships then.

It was fun running around the streets with only our swim wear on.

At least nowadays children in the townships get to cool off at public swimming pools, I think things have changed and evolved, and children spraying water at each other in the streets doesn’t seem like a good idea.

Picnics and braais are what makes me miss summer the most during winter.

I miss the smell of braai meat and boerewors when driving around my hood.

A sunny Saturday afternoon can never be put to waste during summer, it simply calls for a gathering with friends by the pool side with a braai.

Braaing has become part of our culture in this country, we even have National Braai Day coming up September 24 (Heritage Day).

Another great thing about summer is the clothes – no more layering and wearing your whole wardrobe – a summer dress and sandals is all you need to start your day.

Summer clothes also seem a lot cheaper than winter clothes. I couldn’t help but refrain from buying coats this past winter, the prices were just ridiculous.

Generally, I think people shop more during summer and they have more summer clothes than winter clothes.

There are a number of factors that make summer just a favourable season opposed to winter, but hey, that’s just me loving and embracing the summer season.
