Forgive, forget and start afresh

Are the attacks towards foreign nationals in this country the result of the high rate of unemployment among the young people?

Since I was born, I have never left this country, not even for one day.

With xenophobic attacks that are happening in this country, I made a decision that I will never leave my home country to live in another country especially in the African countries.

My decision came after I realised the way that our fellow Africans are treated by some of our community members.

When all these attacks happen in our townships, I keep asking myself whether poverty is the cause of this heartlessness and hateful activities.

It is so sad so see another person crying, hurt and hopeless after he has been robbed of his tuckshop stock and worried about money while also having no idea of what might happen to him the next minute.

I cannot help but wonder if the attackers always claim the victims are taking their jobs, what jobs are they talking about.

Because in most cases when the victims have eventually left the townships, no one seems to be willing to take over the running of the shops and creating employment for others.

However, in some places the young people jump into the opportunity and start their own businesses to feed their families.

Trust me, once these tuckshops are closed down, the people who suffer the most are those from the township who used to walk a very short distance to buy bread and milk every morning, sometimes even getting these on credit.

Despite the recent attacks towards foreign nationals, I am still convinced that South Africans are the people of love, care and peace.

Can we now forget about the past and the pain that we have caused each other and have a fresh start?

This country needs people who will be fighting for peace and better life for all.

We are all Africans, let us love and protect each other all the time.
