Local choir donates school uniforms to Sechaba Primary School learners

The East Rand Male Symphony donated school uniforms to 22 learners at Sechaba Primary School.

Kwa-Thema – The East Rand Male Symphony donated school uniforms to learners at Sechaba Primary School on October 8 as part of the choir’s annual community outreach programme. The school uniform drive was in partnership with Kia Springs, Liberty and supporters of the choir.

“We saw a need to donate school uniforms to 22 learners from impoverished families. As a choir, we needed to assist the School Based Support Team (SBST) to keep learners at school because school uniforms are important,” said choir secretary general Rama Mogaswane.

Mogaswane said when learners have proper school uniforms, they stay focused on their education and not on their clothes.

He mentioned that it also enhances the school’s pride, unity and community union, citing that it promotes discipline and order.

“Having the necessary schoolwear builds self-esteem and confidence. As a choir, we felt that we needed to contribute towards making education a societal priority,” he added.

He added that they hope that their gesture as a choir will assist the learners to remain focused and motivated at school until the end of the year without worrying about how they look among their peers.

“We have also requested the school to select 10 boys to form part of our seventh annual Male Choirs Extravaganza scheduled for October 12 in Kwa-Thema.

“The purpose is to encourage them to participate in extracurricular programmes at school,” Mogaswane said.

He mentioned that they will also mentor the boys academically and on social issues to develop them into marketers and distributors within the economy.

“This outreach programme is driven by the late South African President Nelson Mandela’s quote, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world’.

“We want learners to finish school and do well in their studies without having to worry about what they are going to wear to school,” he concluded.

The school principal, Pearl More expressed her gratitude towards the choir.

“The school leadership, educators, support staff, learners, SGB and the parents from Sechaba Primary School, would like to express words of appreciation and gratitude to the leadership and members of the East Rand Male Symphony choir.

“We are beyond grateful for their generous donations of school uniforms to our learners. We are humbled by such a positive gesture towards our learners,” said More.

She said the donated uniforms will benefit learners who are from poor backgrounds as they will also feel part of the school community.
