Centre to raise awareness about breast cancer

Eyethu Sonke Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) to raise breast cancer awareness while supporting those affected by the disease.

Kwa-Thema – Eyethu Sonke Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) acting administrator Bellinda Mauoane, the Eyethu Sonke event committee and parents are organising a fun walk on October 5.

The event’s theme is a pink tutu or anything pink and is inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month to encourage women to go for regular mammogram check-ups.

It will also show support to anyone fighting the disease. Mauoane said the fun walk will include aerobics and a market day, citing that tickets towards the event will be sold at the centre.

“The fun walk will raise funds for the centre to buy new plates, cutlery, carpets for the classes (mainly for the children) and class furniture for staff members.

“The funds will also be used to revamp the centre on the outside by drawing cartoons on the walls and changing our playground,” she added.

She said the idea was inspired by parents whose children are under the care of Eyethu Sonke ECD, saying their commitment made her organise a sporting event that will bring everyone together.

“We need something fun and unusual for our fundraising project. As a sports enthusiast, I thought we should do something unique for the parents, children, and the community.

“Something we can all come together and connect through while having fun,” she said.

She mentioned the event was targeting the community of Kwatsaduza and all the sporting codes. The market aims to assist the crèche financially.

“The staff members and principal motivated the market day as a way of providing extra financial lift for the centre.

“It is part of the centre’s year plan and only the centre will sell food on the day. All the proceeds will go towards the well-being of the establishment, as it is an internal project,” she mentioned.

She also requested assistance from various companies with groceries and other necessary items to make the day a success.
