Suicide prevention awareness empowers Mbongeni Mgugudu Secondary School students

Grade 11 learners educated about suicide prevention.

Tsakani – Department of Education Gauteng East’s learning support assistant Mohau Msimango from Mbongeni Mgugudu Secondary School noticed several suicide cases in schools.

He then decided to host a suicide prevention awareness with Grade 11 learners on Friday. Lesedi Mogotsi spoke of the causes of suicide among teenagers.

“He gathered this information from various classmates who are also troubled by the increase in cases of suicide among teenagers. Some of the causes include trauma and abuse amongst teenagers,” explained Msimango.

Mogotsi mentioned that abuse comes in different forms. This includes domestic abuse, bullying and substance abuse.

Lesedi Mogotsi, a learner, spoke of the causes of suicide among teenagers.

“We all go through a lot but death is never a solution’ your life is precious,” said Sfiso Cebekhulu. He was addressing learners on the signs of a suicidal person.

He urged his fellow learners to be cautious of suicidal signs which include constant talks of death, and change in behaviour where a person isolates themselves from others and no longer shows interest in activities they once enjoyed.

Mohau Msimango advised learners that September is Suicide Prevention Month, and it’s important to remind you that every day.

“Not just today, your life matters every day. You’ve come this far for a reason even when things feel hopeless and dark, don’t give up. You have the strength to get through any battle you’re facing and remember you are never alone. You have a purpose and you are loved more than you realize, even when it feels otherwise,” she added.
