EMPD arrests duo for fraud

Two taxi drivers were arrested in Kwa-Thema on Saturday and face fraud charges.

Kwa-Thema – EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit officers intercepted two male suspects, aged 20 and 33, for fraud in Kwa-Thema on September 14.

According to CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, EMPD Specialised Services members were performing duties on Habede Street when they saw a red Toyota Conquest.

After stopping the vehicle, the officers did tests to verify its details on the e-Natis system.

“Officers discovered the vehicle’s license disc was fraudulent and immediately arrested the suspect for fraud. Within the same location, officers stopped a white Mazda hatch and asked the driver to produce his driver’s license, which he could not produce.

“Officers inspected the vehicle and did tests to check its VIN. The system detected that the vehicle’s engine number did not match the vehicle’s details,” said Dlamini.

He added that the driver could not provide the officers with satisfactory answers for having the vehicle and was immediately handcuffed and placed under arrest.

The twosome face charges of fraud and were taken to the Kwa-Thema SAPS. They will soon appear in the Kwa-Thema Magistrate’s Court.
