Learners explore different careers

Micheal Zulu Primary School held their career day for Grade Seven learners on August 30.

Tsakani – Life Orientation teacher Thabisile Nhlapho initiated career day as part of her teaching method to expose students to different career options.

Michael Zulu Primary School held their career day for Grade Seven learners on August 30. The school held special events with performances, activities, and learners presenting information obtained from their career findings.

Nhlapho said the career day exposes learners to careers that they did not know about or even imagined existed and it connects them with what they learn in class to the real world.

She also mentioned that learners in Grade Seven are being prepared for high school which is where they are required to select subjects/streams that they want to take which will lead them to university and/or the career they want to pursue.

“Career day furthermore gives learners a chance to learn about the different careers that matches with their interests, abilities and skills. This enables them to identify which career they want to pursue in future.

“The day also gives learners that are not academically gifted a chance to discover their skills and hidden talents,” she added.

Nhlapho added that she teaches her learners about the different careers available, and does activities which highlight their strengths.

“After they have identified the career that they are drawn to, we then research it for each learner to know exactly what they have chosen and what the requirements are,” she added.

She further cited that the reason for teaching different careers is because most learners in the township always focus on the obvious careers like being a teacher, police officer, soldier, nurse, and doctor.

“But with the introduction of career day at school, we now see that they are starting to explore interest in other career fields such as becoming a vet, chemical engineer, gynaecologist, orthopaedic doctors and geologists. The list is endless,” she said.
