Learners excel in social sciences competition

Two Tsakani Primary School learners yielded fruitful results for the school at the Quiz and Olympiad competition.

Tsakani – Two Tsakane Primary School learners recently participated in the Quiz and Olympiad competition held at Menzi Primary School.

The competition had learners write tests based on social sciences content. The Olympiad aims to help learners prepare for the year’s upcoming social sciences syllabus and showcase some of SA’s brightest young scientists in the making.

“The competition aims to promote critical thinking and checks learners’ knowledge about the society they live in. The competition questions encourage all learners, those who love science and those who have never been exposed to the fascinating world of science, to take physical science, life science and mathematics at high school level to consider a career in science, engineering and technology,” said teacher Zilungile Dlamini.

She said the learners yielded fruitful results for the school, saying their Grade Five learner, Samkelisiwe Mabuza, won second place at the competition and received a trophy as recognition for her effort and hard work.

“A learner in Grade Six, Minenhle Mtsweni, placed third and received a medal for her dedication and enthusiasm.

“I feel honoured as an educator. Going up on stage twice to receive my learners’ achievements was an honour. Even though we did not have enough time to prepare for the competition, I am glad we did exceptionally well,” she said.

Dlamini added that her learners made it past the cluster level and will compete again at the district level on August 29.
