Girls get schooled in coding

GirlCode and Vuma are introducing coding to young girls, from grades two to 11 to encourage them to pursue careers in tech.

Kwa-Thema – GirlCode and Vuma held a career day for girls at Job Maseko Primary, on Thursday.

“We are teaching them how to code, using the basic language called Scratch. From this session, they should be able to create their own games.

“In Scratch, there are blocks they can put together and design the game,” explained Zinhle Vilakazi, the project manager for GirlCode.

GirlCode and Vuma are introducing coding to young girls, from grades two to 11 to encourage them to pursue careers in tech. They run weekly sessions called the GirlCoder Club.

“We see girls who come back each year. That is how we know they are interested and want to learn more,” she added.

Pearl Mahlangu, facilitator from GirlCode, taught the girls how to use Scratch to create games.

About 100 girls from the school attended the sessions.

“We are delighted about this great opportunity for our learners. We know that in this day and age, technology can take our girls to the next level.

“I hope that some of the girls will be inspired to create their own apps and make a mark in the technology industry,” said Nompumelelo Sithebe, a teacher.

Kamo Masango, a learner whose ambition is to be a genealogist, said she can see how technology can help with her chosen career.

“Initially, I thought I wouldn’t learn much because my career is in medicine. Now I see technology is everywhere, and can make our jobs easier if we use it correctly,” she added.
