Foundation teaches kids about disabilities

The Living Able Foundation promoted the inclusivity of disabled people at the Eyethu Day Care Centre on Mandela Day.

Kwa-Thema – The Living Able Foundation celebrated Mandela Day with Eyethu Sonke Day Care on July 18.

The aim was to raise awareness of disabilities among young children. The founder of the foundation, Katlego Mkhonza, revealed that the foundation aims to integrate disability awareness into day care centres.

“Some people might ask why we didn’t host at a centre for disabled children, but the idea is to promote inclusivity by raising awareness at a centre for so-called normal children.

“We want them to know what disabilities are and that people living with disabilities are a part of our society,” Mkhonza said.

She said the event was to celebrate the educators.

“The event served its purpose. We also wanted to encourage the teachers and acknowledge their crucial role in children’s early development. It’s not easy raising somebody else’s child; the educators deserve to be celebrated for their wonderful work,” she added.

Vangile Nhlapo, the day care’s principal, welcomed the guests during the programme and expressed joy over the foundation choosing to commemorate Mandela Day with them.

“The event ran smoothly, and I could see the children and educators were happy,” she said.

“The children are being taught about who Nelson Mandela was and how the country became a democracy. This teaching will allow them to appreciate their opportunities and encourage them to give back,” Nhlapo added.

At the end of the event, five-year-old Khumoetsile Letswane stole the attendees’ hearts when he delivered the vote of thanks.
